We are looking for Anaesthetists interested in joining the Department of Anaesthesia at Te Whatu Ora – Te Tai Tokerau (formerly Northland District Health Board). Our positions are permanent, full-time and will involve a regular commitment to both Kaitaia and Whangārei Hospitals.

Te Whatu Ora – Te Tai Tokerau provides public health services across the Northland region, from north of Wellsford to Cape Reinga serving a growing population of 190,000. Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland providing secondary care services, supported by three rural hospitals in Kaitaia, Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands and Dargaville. Of these, only Whangārei and Kaitaia Hospitals have operating theatres, with Whangārei being the only provider of surgery out-of-hours.

Whangārei Hospital has 8 operating theatres and a procedure room co-located in the operating theatre suite, as well as a 2-room endoscopy suite. It provides the majority of the surgical services for Northland, including a wide range of surgical sub-specialties and all emergency surgery for the region. The case-mix is varied and challenging, with a high volume of complex planned surgery as well as a busy trauma service.

Kaitaia Hospital is our northernmost general hospital serving a widely scattered population of approximately 24,000. The 28-bed hospital has a general; paediatric and maternity ward and is largely supported by Whangārei-based specialists. There are 2 operating theatres and a procedure room in Kaitaia, and we are looking to expand surgical services here to enable equity of access for our rural population. Case-mix here tends to be lower complexity, due to the remoteness of the site, but contributes significantly to our Paediatric surgical services as well as other high volume planned surgery.

The Department of Anaesthesia is the largest department within the Surgical Service in Northland providing a 24/7 service to Whangārei Hospital as well as the planned surgery delivered at Kaitaia Hospital. You will be joining a team of approximately 30 Specialist Anaesthetists, together with Anaesthetic SHOs and Registrars who rotate from the Auckland region as part of their training. We work with skilled anaesthetic technicians and other healthcare professionals.

We are looking for a motivated consultant to provide effective and high-quality anaesthetic services to Northland communities in Whangārei & Kaitaia. Frequent travel is a must and you need to be able to work both independently as well as in a team. There will be opportunities to teach/ train resident medical staff and students.

Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau is committed to a system that is Tiriti (Treaty) based and one that actively and purposefully invests in equitable outcomes for its Māori population.

As well as a warm climate, the “winterless north” offers excellent schools; affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. We are just a two hours’ drive or 25-minute flight from the international hub of Auckland. To learn more about our stunning location please visit https://www.northlandnz.com/visit/

Ideally you will have obtained FANZCA and bring clinical experience from NZ and/ or an equivalent health care system. For more information about the MCNZ registration process, please visit www.mcnz.org.nz

We offer a competitive relocation package to support you and your family to make the move to Whangārei. Te Whatu Ora – Te Tai Tokerau is also an Approved Accredited Employer by the New Zealand Immigration Service and can assist you to obtain an appropriate work visa.

Requirements for applying for jobs in New Zealand

In New Zealand, all applications to assess international specialist qualifications must be submitted to the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

If an application is accepted, the MCNZ will work with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists who will evaluate the ability of a specialist to practice as an unsupervised specialised anaesthetist at a standard comparable to that required of a Fellow of the College.  Therefore, your first step is to contact MCNZ.

The College also provides information on their website. Learn more at ANZCA.

The New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists (NZSA) represents medically registered Anaesthetists in New Zealand and promotes patient safety. Our mission is to serve our membership through advocacy, education and strengthening the anaesthesia community, and in turn the wellbeing of patients.

We are proud to represent anaesthetists in New Zealand and hope that if you do proceed with New Zealand registration you consider becoming an NZSA member.
